A dream turned into sparkling reality as Velfrey Vineyard from Lampeter Velfrey, near Narberth in Pembrokeshire, picked up the award for Small Drinks Producer of the year at the Food and Drink Wales Awards 2023.
The award was collected by Ryan Mounsey and Sophie Lockie, the soon to be married couple who are one half of the family team which runs the vineyard. Ryan said: “We are absolutely thrilled and honoured to receive this accolade at such a prestigious event.”
It is recognition of many years of hard work in establishing the vineyard from an overgrown pasture - a journey which has culminated in the production of wines of such quality that Velfrey was one of only two UK vineyards to feature in the 100 Master-Winning Winemakers from the Global Wine Masters. Velfrey was also the winner of the Visit Pembrokeshire Croeso Award for Tourism Innovation at the end of last year.
Sophie commented: “We really want to thank everyone who have helped us along the way with our planning and preparation, the planting, growing and harvesting of our grapes. We really could not have achieved this without the help of so many people.”
The vineyard produces a range of award-winning sparkling and still wines and offers vineyard tours with tasting and Welsh cheese and charcuterie grazing boards.
