'Amy understands the anxieties of young people'
As Amy Nicholass, Lead Candidate for the Green Party in Ceredigion Penfro, travels round the two counties, she encounters lots of young people. Amy is a good listener. She has noticed real anxiety among young people. Amy says, “They tell me how worried they are about the conflict in the Middle East. They hate seeing the people of Iran and Palestine suffer. Watching people lose their homes and their families, many young people find it very upsetting.”
Then of course there is the anxiety about climate change. Amy understands this and their frustration. “Young people have seen one set of politicians after another promise to tackle climate change and yet things just get worse. We absolutely need to stop our reliance on fossil fuels. That will help stop fuelling wars and it will combat the climate crisis at the same time.”
For Amy, the important thing is to offer young people hope. “They talk to me about their own daily struggles such as being able to travel around in rural west Wales. They frequently miss out on fun events as they can’t get there or can’t get home, or they miss important appointments.”
The answers to these issues are linked. As Amy states, “Tackling climate change and helping young people in rural west Wales can both be solved by providing better public transport. The Green Party has been offering solutions for decades. Young people have joined us in droves. I wish to be elected on a promise to make young people’s lives better here. I want them to have lives full of joy, not constant worry.”
