Waverley, the World's last seagoing paddle steamer, will make a welcome return to Fishguard on Wednesday 17th June as part of her annual visit to South West Wales.
Celebrating 80 years since her launch in 1946, the historic vessel continues a proud tradition of steamship travel, offering passengers a unique evening cruise along the stunning Pembrokeshire coastline. Those joining the sailing will enjoy spectacular views of Strumble Head Lighthouse before continuing towards St David's Head.
Matthew Tucker MBE, Fishguard Port Manager expressed his excitement for the visit, “Stena Line Ports is proud to welcome the iconic paddle steamer Waverley on 17 June, marking a special occasion for the port and the local community. Her arrival offers a rare opportunity for visitors and residents alike to experience a unique and much-loved vessel up close.
This year’s visit is made even more significant as Waverley celebrates the 80th anniversary of her launch, and her call at Fishguard places the port firmly on the map as part of this historic journey, attracting enthusiasts, tourists, and day-trippers eager to be part of the experience.
We expect the visit to create a vibrant buzz across the area, showcasing Fishguard as a destination rich in heritage and coastal charm. Events like this highlight the port’s versatility and its ability to host a diverse range of vessels, from modern ferries to historic steamships. We look forward to giving Waverley a warm Pembrokeshire welcome and to sharing this memorable moment with the community and visitors from far and wide.”
Waverley's General Manager, Paul Semple, commented: "Waverley's visit to Fishguard this year is particularly special as she continues to steam around the coastline of Great Britain eight decades after her launch. While the cost of operating a historic ship continues to rise, including a 65% increase in fuel costs this season, Waverley remains very much in operation thanks to the tremendous support we receive from passengers, members, volunteers and supporters across the UK.
The best way people can help secure Waverley's future is by stepping aboard and enjoying a cruise, helping to ensure she can continue sailing for generations to come."
Onboard Waverley passengers can savour the sight and sound of a real steamship - hear the telegraph ring, visit the Engine Room and watch the engine start to move and see the paddles turning through the portholes.
With full catering facilities available throughout all cruises- passengers can enjoy a hot or cold snack, tea and cake in the afternoon, a hot meal in the Dining Saloon or a refreshment in one of the period lounges, as well as a visit to the Souvenir Shop to take home an exclusive gift or memento of their trip on this famous and much-loved ship.
Waverley is also due to call Milford Haven and Tenby on Tuesday 16th June during her annual visit to the Pembrokeshire.
