Council tax arrears are a priority debt – Pembrokeshire residents urged to act quickly
This debt awareness week, Citizens Advice Pembrokeshire is reminding residents that council tax arrears are a priority debt and encouraging anyone who is behind on payments to take action as soon as possible.
Many households in Pembrokeshire continue to face rising living costs, and advisers at Citizens Advice Pembrokeshire are seeing increasing numbers of people struggling with essential bills, including council tax.
Council tax arrears are classed as a priority debt, meaning the consequences of not paying can be serious. If arrears are not addressed, the council may take action through the courts, and in some cases, enforcement agents (bailiffs) may be used or deductions made from wages or benefits.
Anyone who is behind on council tax must contact Pembrokeshire County Council directly on the following number: 01437 764551 follow the voice prompts (Council Tax for reminder notices or Summons if it has gone to summons / Court) or email the following address revenue.services@pembrokeshire.gov.uk.
Citizens Advice Pembrokeshire is independent and impartial and does not act on behalf of the council. We cannot manage council tax accounts, make payments, or contact the council for residents.
Speaking to the council early can help prevent the situation from escalating. In many cases, the council may be able to discuss payment arrangements, explain available support, or allow time for applications for Council Tax Reduction.
A spokesperson for Citizens Advice Pembrokeshire said:
“This debt awareness week, we wanted to highlight the need to deal with priority debts first – which includes council tax. We’re seeing more people locally struggling with priority debts like council tax and often putting off getting help because it feels overwhelming, but acting early can stop things escalating and make the situation far more manageable”.
While Citizens Advice Pembrokeshire cannot intervene in council tax payments, advisers can provide free, independent advice to help people understand their rights, their options, and next steps — particularly if enforcement action is being threatened or if someone is dealing with multiple debts. There is also information about Council Tax arrears on our website.
