Fishguard RNLI volunteers look forward to another bumper open day

Fishguard RNLI station will once again be opening its doors to visitors for its annual open day, on what is shaping up to be a great family day out.

Every year in August the lifeboat station holds its Open Day and Breakwater Walk.

Every year the event has been going from strength to strength as seeing visitors numbers climb, leading to more funds being raised to support the vital services of the charity.

This year there will be the opportunity to see both the stations Trent class all weather lifeboat Blue Peter VII, and D-class inshore lifeboat Edward Arthur Richardson up close, and to find out more about them from the volunteer crew.

Find out how these assets help us in our lifesaving work, and maybe hear a story or two about past rescues.

There will also be live music from local choirs and bands, games for both children and adults as well as a BBQ, refreshments and the return of our popular cake stall selling slices of delicious homemade cake.

Supporting our event this year will be our emergency service colleagues from Dyfed-Powys Police, Welsh Ambulance Service Trust, HM Coastguard and Mountain Rescue.

As always, a popular part of the day is the breakwater walk. StenaLine who manage the port have kindly once again given us permission to open up the breakwater for our visitors to take a stroll, and our friends from Sea Trust will be on hand to chat about the marine environment, and hopefully as with previous years the dolphins will put in an appearance.

Fishguard RNLI volunteer fundraiser and event lead organiser, Dai Rogers, said:

“It's our flagship event and we're lucky to have a good team of volunteers and crew which allows us to run a whole range of events through the calendar year, but this is our big one, it seems to draw in a lot of people to have fun and enjoy the afternoon with us.

What we also like to include is the opportunity for people who are thinking about joining the RNLI to chat to volunteers and find out more about the roles available. The roles are varied, so whether afloat or supporting on shore, there is likely something to suit everyone.”

The event will be running Sunday 9 August from 2pm – 6pm at Fishguard Lifeboat station.

This year, in a change to previous years, parking in the port will only be available to Blue Badge holders and routine access only. Visitors are being asked to park at Goodwick Moor Car Park adjacent to the Tesco Express and Esso Garage. Marshals will be on hand along the route to guide you to the lifeboat station.
