Fishguard and Goodwick celebrate 70 years of Moby Dick with giant 8ft whale parade and Festival
Seventy years after Hollywood came to Fishguard and Goodwick to film John Huston’s Moby Dick, starring Gregory Peck, the film’s legacy is a major theme of this year’s Ar Ymyl y Tir On Land’s Edge Festival - an annual celebration of music, theatre, film and literature in this creative enclave of North Pembrokeshire. A giant eight-foot illuminated Moby Dick will form the centrepiece of a spectacular ‘Fish and Ships’ lantern parade through Fishguard on 25th September, leading a shoal of handmade fish and sailing ship creations through the town.
The festival runs across Fishguard and Goodwick from 25–27th September, with a special 70th-anniversary screening of the film alongside its wider cultural programme which also includes a community sea swim. The festival also reflects the area’s thriving creative scene, from Theatr Gwaun and a strong live music circuit at venues including Ffwrn and Peppers, to galleries and artist-led spaces including the newly opened 10 West Gallery, while the Art Afoot trail brings the work of local and regionally based artists into the streets and coastal landscape. Visitors can explore the Hollywood connection year-round too, with locations featured in Moby Dick included on the Fishguard Heritage Trail as well as street art.
