New laboratory and workshop plans approved at Valero Refinery

Plans for new laboratory and workshop buildings at Valero Refinery near Pembroke have been given the go-ahead.

Pembrokeshire County Council’s planning committee unanimously approved the proposals, which will see the facilities relocated from within the refinery’s existing ‘blast zone’ to a location outside of the zone.

The development will include a new single-storey laboratory building and a two-storey workshop, along with access, car parking, landscaping and associated works.

Planning documents state the new workshop will have a floor area of around 1,887 square metres, while the laboratory will cover approximately 2,161 square metres.

The proposals are intended to replace the refinery’s existing laboratory and workshop facilities, with the relocation providing health and safety benefits for those working at the site.

An officer report described the proposed buildings as functional but contemporary, with their appearance designed to complement the nearby fire hall.

Speaking at the planning meeting, local councillor Steve Alderman welcomed the development, particularly the move to relocate workers away from the existing ‘blast area’.

The application was unanimously approved, subject to conditions.
