Ceredigion’s Epic 3-Day Challenge Sees Community Rally for Vital Local Charity

Endurance Riders Team Includes Bethan Lewis, Kayleigh Tonkins, Carol Jones, Karen Cadman

CEREDIGION, WEST WALES – From the open sea to the rugged mountains, the journey will test every discipline, ultra-fit runners to seasoned endurance riders, community cyclists to magnificent Shire horses – teams across Ceredigion are stepping up in their own unique ways for Beating the Bounds for Oxygen, a three-day, multi-discipline pilgrimage in support of the Cardigan Oxygen Therapy Centre, running from August 15–17, 2025.

While the event promises breathtaking views, epic endurance, and a celebration of local landscapes, it’s the individual stories behind the challenge that truly show the heart of this community.

Participants will trace the ancient boundary of Ceredigion by boat, bike, horse, and foot, raising awareness and funds for the Cardigan Oxygen Therapy Centre – a lifeline for locals living with MS, cancer, fibromyalgia, and long Covid.

On the road, the cycling community has rallied together, with local group Aeron Grupetto stepping in to take to the hills and support the Tarling family, whose elite young riders, Josh and Finlay, are away racing.

“The Tarling family is delighted to support this fantastic community event,” said Dawn Tarling. “While the boys are away, their dad Michael, who is also a keen rider, will proudly take part – joined by members of the Aeron Grupetto, a great group of local cyclists from the area.”

The spirit of adventure is strong from the riders taking on the spectacular mountain leg, where a team of experienced endurance riders will take to the rugged Cambrian Mountains.

“All of us love an adventure. This is why we do endurance – you get to explore the countryside and places you would never usually see,” said Bethan Lewis, part of the all-women riding team from Endurance GB Mid and North Wales. “To be able to take on this challenge while raising money for such a vital local charity is a challenge we were all game for.”

The journey continues on foot, where the motivation is just as strong. For Rhodri Williams, who’s running the final day solo, the decision to join was instinctive.

“I think any opportunity to help a local charity out, especially doing something I enjoy, is a no-brainer,” said Rhodri. “Everybody wins, and I get a good training run for my half-marathon prep.”

That commitment is echoed by the running club tasked with bringing the relay home. Local running club Clwb Rhedeg Aberteifi will represent their town on foot, bringing a mix of athletes to the trail.

“We like nothing more than a challenge, and this one is unique because of the range of disciplines involved and the variety of terrain,” said Ben O’Leary, one of the club’s members. “We're supporting the Centre because, stating the obvious, oxygen fuels our runs. Being able to breathe is essential, so we're happy to help those who need support.”

The entire 125-mile journey culminates in a grand finale procession into Cardigan, led by John Fletcher and his magnificent Gentle Giant Shire Horses, George and Joe. For John, the motivation is deeply personal:

“I’ve seen first-hand the benefit and positive impact that oxygen therapy can have on people’s lives,” he said.

The public are warmly invited to cheer on the teams at key checkpoints along the route. The full schedule is available on the event's Facebook page. Donations can be made via the official JustGiving page:
