Plaid - Westminster’s Failure to Deliver Fair Funding for Wales will Lead to Challenging Fiscal Reality for Next Welsh Government Despite Labour’s Claims of “largest-ever settlement”

Plaid Cymru

“Unlike Labour we won’t back down from standing up for what’s right for Wales” says Heledd Fychan MS.

Responding to the report published today by Cardiff University’s Wales Governance Centre, Plaid Cymru spokesperson for Finance, Heledd Fychan MS said: “The funding Wales receives simply doesn’t match up to our needs as a nation, and this report proves it. It completely debunks the false narrative spun by both the Tories and Reform that Wales is somehow in a privileged position compared to the rest of the UK, in which both parties deliberately undermine the case for a fairer deal for Wales and leave us picking up the crumbs that fall from Westminster's table.

"Meanwhile, any idea that Labour’s ‘partnership in power’ is delivering for Wales when it comes to fairer funding has been squashed entirely. This failure means the next Welsh Government faces a challenging fiscal reality, and it’s the people of Wales and our services that be affected.

“Unlike Labour, we won’t back down from standing up for what’s fair for Wales. A Plaid Cymru government won't hesitate to get to work on fighting for fair funding and reforming the Barnett Formula - urging the UK Government to work with devolved governments to re-assess the financial needs of our nations. It’s high-time Wales receives a needs-based funding model which doesn’t leave us at the mercy of UK Government’s spending decisions in England.”
