A community growing project in Pembrokeshire has captured global attention after sharing a video of a queen bee nesting in an unexpected place - a compost wormery.

Cilrath Acre, a community growing space near Narberth, recently posted the short clip on social media, where it has since been viewed over 6.2 million times and attracted thousands of new followers from around the world.

The video shows a queen bumblebee (thought to be a Tree bumblebee) nesting within the project’s wormery, offering a rare and fascinating glimpse into how wildlife can thrive alongside sustainable food growing.

The project’s Lead Grower and permaculture expert Dina Kingsnorth, says the response has been incredible and has helped shine a spotlight on our important project. “We’re passionate about working with nature, and this was a perfect example of how creating the right environment can support biodiversity in unexpected ways” she said. “It’s been amazing to see so many people engaging with that.”

Cilrath Acre, which is funded by the National Lottery Communities Fund thanks to National Lottery players, works with a team of volunteers to grow food, supporting Pembrokeshire Foodbank with weekly deliveries of fresh produce. The project also
hosts workshops and community sessions focused on sustainable growing, wellbeing, and connecting people with nature.

The team hopes the viral moment will inspire people locally to get involved, learn new skills, and take small steps towards supporting nature in their own spaces.
