Plaid Cymru call for all household facing ‘exorbitant heating oil and LPG prices’ to be considered for support

Responding to the Prime Minister’s announcement that the government will provide £53m to help vulnerable households who have been hit by a sharp increase in the price of heating oil, Plaid Cymru Westminster leader, Liz Saville Roberts MP said:

“Plaid Cymru welcomes the UK Government’s recognition that households reliant on heating oil are facing soaring costs and have far fewer protections than those connected to the gas grid. However, any intervention must provide swift and tangible support, not simply a box-ticking exercise.

“Families across rural communities are already experiencing sharply rising heating costs. While targeted support for the poorest households is welcome, all households facing exorbitant heating oil and LPG prices should be considered for assistance if this recognition of unfairness is to be meaningful.

“The energy price cap set by Ofgem is not means-tested, so households who are not connected to the gas grid will understandably question why they are treated differently. As it stands, many rural households will receive no help simply because of where they live. This will feel especially hard in Wales as we come out of a grim winter."
