A determined law student is gearing up for an extraordinary fundraising challenge in honour of the diabetes centre her family has relied on for more than four decades.
Cerys Mai Evans, from Saron, Carmarthenshire, is taking on the 112-mile cycle and Wales marathon at Long Course Weekend 2026 to raise funds for the Diabetes Centre at Glangwili Hospital.
The Long Course Weekend, which takes place in Tenby from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th June 2026, is the biggest multisport festival in Europe, attracting over 10,000 athletes and 35,000 supporters from 45 nations.
Cerys said: “I’m raising money for the Diabetic Centre at Glangwili because they have cared for my Aunty and Mum for 41 years. They were both diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at six years old in 1985 and 1988. My younger sister, Lleucu, was also diagnosed at the age of 11 in 2022.
“Unfortunately, my aunty had to undergo a below‑the‑knee amputation in January last year due to diabetes complications, and my mum is also beginning to see the effects of the condition on her eyesight. I want to give something back to the unit so they can continue providing incredible care to others living with diabetes and help more people access new diabetes technologies.”
Tara Nickerson, Fundraising Manager, said: “We’re all incredibly inspired by Cerys’ fundraiser. We’re so grateful she is turning her family’s experience into something that will help other people in similar situations.
“The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive.”
