Côr Dyfed Choir

St David's Catherdral

Saturday July 18th

7.30pm

Côr Dyfed Choir has a membership of 70 members, drawn from across Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion.

Rehearsals are held weekly during term time, resulting in two major concerts with orchestra in St Davids Cathedral in December and July, and a third Easter concert in a Pembrokeshire church.

The choir’s aim is to bring classical, choral music to the people of the 3 counties, and to the many holidaymakers who visit St Davids in December and July.

The choir also presents a Carols by Candlelight concert in the cathedral to raise money for local charities such as Pembrokeshire Samaritans and The Paul Sartori Foundation.

Our charity carol concert on December 5th 2026 will be in aid of the Wales Air Ambulance.

Young singers are given the opportunity of singing with the choir through our Youth Choral Scholarship Scheme, funded by Valero, which gives one year of choir membership free of charge, free music lessons with a qualified singing teacher, and the chance to sing major choral works such as Handel Messiah, John Rutter Requiem and Karl Jenkins The Armed Man.

The choir celebrates 60 years of singing in 2027, and an exciting programme of music is being planned.

The choir was founded in 1967 by John S Davies, a prominent musician who has worked tirelessly with choirs and music festivals across the county for many years.

Since then our conductors have been Christopher Barton, Timothy Noon ( now at Exeter Cathedral ), Alexander Mason, celebrated organist, Daniel Cook ( Durham Cathedral ) and Oliver Waterer (Selby Abbey) Our current director is Luke Spencer.

This year, on Saturday, July 18th we shall perform John Rutter Requiem and Karl Jenkins The Armed Man, a popular work, voted number one in Classic FM Hall of Fame, Easter 2026.

The subtitle to this work is A Mass for Peace.

Particularly pertinent in the current political climate, it is dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo Crisis. The work seeks to unite all faiths and creeds, using part of the Christian mass together with the call to prayers.

(Adhan) It begins with the army marching towards conflict, followed by battle, the terrible aftermath of the fighting; its effect on animal and humankind and ending with bells ringing out and a plea for peace.

The orchestral scoring is very exciting, with battle trumpets and percussion and a  single trumpet playing the last post after the battle.

We hope to fill the cathedral with amazing, inspiring music for this performance.
