Petition Launched Urging Fair Access to Student Finance for Welsh Performing Arts Students
A new petition has been launched calling on the Welsh Government to urgently review student finance eligibility rules that are preventing Welsh-domiciled students from accessing funding for certain specialist performing arts degrees delivered through university partnerships in England.
The issue came to light when a Welsh parent began researching higher education options for her daughter, Lily, who has been dancing since the age of six with FF Dancers and hopes to pursue a professional career through a specialist dance or musical theatre degree.
During the application process, the family discovered that Student Finance Wales no longer provides funding for some specialist performing arts courses delivered in partnership with English universities — despite students in other parts of the UK still being eligible for financial support for the same programmes.
Previously available funding routes have now been removed for many Welsh students, creating a significant and unexpected barrier. As a result, talented young performers are being forced to decline places they have secured through highly competitive auditions purely because of where they live.
The petition calls on the Welsh Government to urgently review the policy and restore fair access to student finance, ensuring Welsh students are not disadvantaged when pursuing specialist performing arts training.
Supporters argue that access to professional training should be based on talent and dedication — not postcode.
