Gwreiddiau / Roots Discovery Days inspire hundreds of young people to connect with nature

More than 200 pupils from seven schools took part in two inspiring Gwreiddiau / Roots Discovery Days at Dale, enjoying hands-on outdoor experiences designed to build confidence, develop new skills and deepen their connection with nature.

The two-day event brought together pupils from across Pembrokeshire to explore the National Park through a range of engaging activities led by local experts and organisations. The Discovery Days also welcomed representatives from South Hook LNG, principal funders of the Gwreiddiau / Roots project, who were able to see first-hand the positive impact their support is having on young people across the county.

Hosted in the beautiful surroundings of Dale, the Discovery Days showcased the breadth of opportunities available through the Gwreiddiau / Roots programme. Pupils explored the coastline with Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority staff Bryony Rees and Ranger Molly Ashton, discovering the rich habitats of the rocky shore and using the newly developed Cleddau Spotter Guide to identify local wildlife.

The group also took part in a food and sustainability session with Tan y Môr, where Chef Kate introduced pupils to locally farmed and foraged produce from the Dale Peninsula, before helping them create butter using local ingredients.

Dale artists Sean and Wendy Kehoe led a series of creative workshops, giving pupils the opportunity to design coastal-themed T-shirts and craft unique auger shell sculptures. Using natural materials and inspiration from the surrounding environment, the activities encouraged creativity while helping participants develop a deeper appreciation for the area's natural beauty.

The adventure continued on the water with Windswept Watersports, where pupils learned essential water safety skills while working together on giant stand-up paddleboards, building teamwork, resilience and confidence in a fun and supportive environment.

The Discovery Days are part of the Gwreiddiau / Roots programme, an outdoor learning initiative that brings the Curriculum for Wales to life through real-world experiences in the National Park. By exploring the Daugleddau Estuary, its wildlife, landscapes and communities, pupils gain a deeper understanding of the natural environment while developing a lasting sense of place and responsibility for the world around them.
