Plaid Cymru’s first 100 days puts Wales on path towards most generous childcare offer in UK

Plaid Cymru’s first 100 days in government has shown a clear commitment towards delivering “transformative” new childcare offer for Wales, Members of Senedd for Ceredigion Penfro have said.

During the Senedd election in May 2026, Plaid Cymru pledged the most generous childcare offer in the history of devolution – worth more than £30,000 in childcare costs.

Over this Senedd term, Plaid Cymru will phase in 20 hours of free childcare per week, 48 weeks of the year, for all children aged 9 months to 4 years old to support families.

During the first 100 days in government, Plaid Cymru has shown its determination to deliver on its universal childcare offer – with all 22 local authorities now on track to complete the first phase of expansion this financial year, to provide 12.5 hours childcare a week for all two-year-olds.

Plaid MS’s Elin Jones, Kerry Ferguson and Anna Nicholl said the party’s commitment to supporting families across Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire is “crystal clear”.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Anna Nicholl MS said:“Plaid Cymru promised to deliver a transformative new childcare offer for Wales – and just 100 days in, we’ve already made more progress than what Labour did in 5 years!

“Working with Ceredigion County Council and Pembrokeshire County Council all two-year-olds in Ceredigion Penfro will receive 12.5 hours of free childcare by the end of March 2027.

“We know Wales has some of the highest childcare costs in the UK, with parents spending more on childcare than on housing. Doing nothing was never an option.

“We’re proud to be Plaid Cymru Members of the Senedd, whose government’s commitment to supporting families in Ceredigion Penfro is crystal clear.

“The work already done within the first 100 days now puts Wales on a clear path towards delivering the most generous childcare offer in the UK by the end of this Senedd term – supporting parents, giving our economy a boost, and giving every child the best start in life.”
