PLAID CYMRU CALLS OUT FIRST MINISTER

Just over a week since the Welsh Labour Government voted against a Plaid Cymru motion calling for the introduction of a wealth tax and the removal of the two child benefit cap, Plaid Cymru’s Social Justice spokesperson, Sioned Williams MS has called out the First Minister for the hypocrisy of her wealth tax calls ahead of Labour’s Annual Conference.

In a document titled 'Labour Works: Local Action on Child Poverty', Eluned Morgan writes that wealthier people should pay higher taxes to try to end child poverty.

In response, Sioned Williams MS said:

“If the First Minister feels so strongly about introducing a wealth tax you would have expected her to vote in favour of a Plaid Cymru motion in the Senedd last week proposing just that.

“Once again, we see Labour saying one thing and doing another. No wonder their popularity is plummeting when they take the public for fools.

“It is simply not the case that the Labour Welsh Government have used every tool at their disposal to tackle child poverty. In reality, child poverty has remained stubbornly high on their watch whilst they have scrapped targets to eradicate it.

“The First Minister could follow Scotland’s lead and introduce a transformational weekly child payment. That is what a Plaid Cymru government will do if elected in May rather than wait around for orders from Westminster.”
