Consultation opens on plans for new 3-19 school in Tenby

A public consultation has opened on proposals which could see two Tenby schools discontinued and replaced by a new 3-19 community school.

Pembrokeshire County Council is seeking views on plans to discontinue Tenby Church in Wales Voluntary Controlled School and Ysgol Greenhill and establish a single school serving pupils from the age of three through to 19.

Under the proposals, the new school would initially operate across the existing sites. Longer-term options through the Sustainable Communities for Learning programme include rebuilding or extending the Greenhill site, or developing a new site.

The plans follow a review of education provision in the Tenby area, which considered falling pupil numbers and the level of surplus school places.

Pembrokeshire County Council agreed in December 2025 that statutory consultation should begin on establishing a new 3-19 school. Consultation was subsequently undertaken with the St David’s Diocese before the council agreed in July to proceed with a wider public consultation.

The council says it has a statutory responsibility to ensure sufficient and suitable school places are available and to consider whether its resources and facilities are being used effectively.

Steven Richards-Downes, Pembrokeshire Council’s Director of Education, said: “This consultation document sets out the proposal to establish a new 3-19 community school, split site initially, but as part of future Sustainable Communities for Learning investment to rebuild/extend Greenhill site, or on a new site, with the discontinuation of Tenby Church in Wales Voluntary Controlled (VC) School and Ysgol Greenhill.”

People taking part in the consultation can comment on the proposals, make observations or suggest alternative options for consideration.

The consultation runs until November 3, 2026.

Paper copies can also be requested by contacting the council’s education consultations team on 01437 764551.
