Beating the Bounds for Oxygen 04-08-25

Oxygen
CARDIGAN, CEREDIGION – From August 15th-17th, an unprecedented 3-day relay, ‘Beating the Bounds for Oxygen’, will see dedicated teams of rowers, cyclists, horse riders, and runners trace the historic county boundary of Ceredigion. The epic, non-competitive challenge aims to raise £5,000+ and vital public awareness for the Cardigan Oxygen Therapy Centre, a charity providing essential support for local people living with conditions such as MS, cancer, and long Covid.
The journey will see participants traverse Ceredigion’s stunning coastline, rugged uplands, and river valleys, honouring an ancient tradition to support a modern-day lifeline. The event begins on Friday, 15th August, as longboats navigate the coast from Cardigan to Aberporth. Cyclists will then take the symbolic event bibs north towards Aberystwyth and inland via Devils Bridge to finish the day at Cwmystwyth. Day two will see endurance horse riders traverse the Cambrian Mountains, passing the iconic Strata Florida Abbey and Soar-y-mynydd chapel on their way to Lampeter. The finale on Sunday, 17th August, follows the River Teifi, where runners and kayakers will bring the bibs back to Cardigan, culminating in a final procession led by a magnificent Shire Horse.
“To be honest, I would never have dreamt up this idea if it hadn't been for the Cardigan Oxygen Therapy Centre. I knew we had to do something unique. The idea of reviving the ancient tradition of 'beating the bounds' took hold, and it's grown into this wonderful, landmark event. For me, it’s a powerful story: the athletes of our community, who are fit and able, are undertaking this pilgrimage to support their neighbours who simply can’t. It’s Ceredigion in action, helping its own.” SABRINA JOHNSON, EVENT ORGANISER
The Cardigan Oxygen Therapy Centre is funded entirely by community generosity, offering affordable hyperbaric oxygen treatment and complementary therapies to people from across West Wales.
The public is warmly invited to cheer on participants along the route and donate via the official JustGiving page to help this vital local resource continue its work.
