FIRST MINISTER BACKTRACKS ON CALLS TO REJOIN SINGLE MARKET AND CUSTOMS UNION
"The First Minister has today confirmed that she will always put party before country – and the so-called ‘red Welsh way’ has already hit several dead ends” – Rhun ap Iorwerth MS
Plaid Cymru leader, Rhun ap Iorwerth MS, has today (Tuesday 20th May 2025) accused the First Minister of putting party before country by backtracking on her previous calls for the Labour party to commit to rejoining Single Market and Customs Union.
As former Lifelong Learning Minister in 2018, Eluned Morgan called on the Labour party “to go further” and commit to rejoining the Single Market and Customs Union in the “long term”.
The Plaid Cymru leader has said that removing trade barriers with the EU is imperative to reversing damage inflicted on Welsh communities by Brexit.
Responding following the exchange with the Labour First Minister, Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth MS said:
“The First Minister knows that it is only by removing trade barriers with our largest neighbouring market that we can begin to reverse the damage inflicted on Welsh communities by Brexit.
“In backtracking from her previous calls for the Labour party to commit to rejoining the Single Market and Customs Union, the First Minister has today confirmed that she will always put party before country – and the so-called ‘red Welsh way’ has already hit several dead ends.”
