Pembrokeshire Rescue Dog Taran Helps Give Back Through Children's Books
A Pembrokeshire teacher has turned her rescue dog's adventures into a series of children's books, using the proceeds to support the animal rescue centre where their story first began.
Vicky Hammett and her terrier Taran visited Greenacres Rescue Centre on Sunday, November 1, to donate money raised from sales of her first book.
Taran was adopted from Greenacres 12 years ago, shortly after Vicky moved to Pembrokeshire from Hertfordshire.
When Vicky was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, she began writing during her time away from teaching while receiving treatment. Inspired by Taran's entertaining behaviour, she created Tales of Taran the Tenacious Terrier.
“I wanted to do something positive during a difficult time,” Vicky said. “Taran is so comical and therefore easy to write about. Many of the stories are true and follow Taran’s attempts to understand humans and their strange ways!”
The first book's success has since led to a second publication, Taran and the Christmas Present, with Vicky hoping future sales will generate further donations for Greenacres.
Her recent visit highlighted the ongoing pressures facing the rescue centre, as two stray dogs arrived shortly after another dog had been collected by its new owners.
“Greenacres do such an incredible job,” Vicky said. “It was a pleasure meeting Evette and learning about the work of the centre.”
The heartwarming initiative is helping Taran give something back to the organisation that found him his forever home more than a decade ago.
