A local opticians in Haverfordwest is raising awareness of glaucoma, a condition affecting around 700,000 people in the UK, by hosting a bake sale in support of nationwide charity, Glaucoma UK.
Coinciding with World Glaucoma Awareness Week (9 - 15 March), an annual campaign encouraging people to talk about the effects of glaucoma, the fundraiser will take place at Specsavers in Haverfordwest on Wednesday 12 March between 10am and 4pm.
During the event, the store will offer a variety of baked goods donated by staff and local café, The Box.
According to Glaucoma UK, between 2015 and 2035, the number of people living with glaucoma in the UK is set to rise by 44%. Early detection plays a crucial role in preventing sight loss, as glaucoma can often be managed effectively if diagnosed in time.
Andy Britton, director and specialist glaucoma practitioner at Specsavers Haverfordwest, explains: ‘Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of sight loss, but with early detection and treatment, it can be managed effectively. That’s why raising awareness is so important.
‘We’re thrilled to be hosting this fundraiser for Glaucoma UK and we’d love for the local community to come along, enjoy some cake and help support this vital cause. Our team will also be available to offer advice for those concerned about glaucoma.’
To further boost fundraising efforts, the store will hold a raffle with prizes including a food and movie night hamper and a voucher for local restaurant, Waldo Lounge.
Alongside cash donations on the day, Specsavers Haverfordwest has also set up a JustGiving page to allow those unable to attend in person to contribute to its fundraising efforts.
