Kurtz’s Community Campaign Launched to Secure a Regional Banking Hub for South Pembrokeshire
Samuel Kurtz MS is spearheading the launch of a community campaign today calling for a dedicated Banking Hub located in Pembroke Dock, following confirmation that Lloyds Bank will close its branch in the town on 26th June 2025.
The latest bank closure marks the loss of the last remaining bank branch in Pembroke Dock — and the last in the broader South Pembrokeshire region, after the successive closures of branches in Pembroke, Tenby, Saundersfoot, Narberth, Neyland, and Milford Haven. Only a Nationwide Building Society remains in Milford Haven.
The local Member of the Senedd Samuel Kurtz is calling on residents, local businesses, and community councils to support his formal request for the creation of a Banking Hub, which is a shared banking facility offering face-to-face services operated by major UK banks to be located in Pembroke Dock.
“This bank closure is a devastating loss for our communities,” said Samuel Kurtz, Member of the Senedd for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire. “ I know that online banking suits most people most of the time but there are times when actually speaking to someone face to face is essential. I don’t see why people living right across South Pembrokeshire should have to travel miles and miles to do that.” He added “The LINK organisation, which assesses banking needs, claims existing ATMs and Post Offices are sufficient. But this does not reflect reality — especially for elderly residents, small businesses, and those who rely on in-person advice and services. I believe that a banking hub for all in South Pembrokeshire is what’s needed to help keep banking accessible to everyone in our community - and it supports the High Street.”
The most recent LINK assessment was conducted remotely on 29 January 2025 and concluded no new banking provision was needed. Samuel Kurtz MS strongly disputes this, highlighting:
Essential face-to-face services — such as mortgage advice, direct debit management, and support for powers of attorney — are not available at Post Offices.
Pembroke Dock’s status as a regional retail centre, serving nearby towns including Tenby, Pembroke, and Neyland.
A significantly underestimated population, with real figures likely exceeding 54,000 across South Pembrokeshire.
Poor transport links to alternative branches in Haverfordwest, making travel costly and inaccessible for many.
He has arranged a meeting with LINK to talk through the steps needed to secure a Banking Hub but is urging residents to sign an online petition and submit a review request to LINK.
Samuel commented, “With community support, I believe we can make a powerful and evidence-based case for a Banking Hub in Pembroke Dock — ideally based at the existing Lloyds site on Dimond Street. With Pembroke Dock being an important retail hub for South Pembrokeshire, it makes sense for a new banking hub to be located within the town. I’m asking as many people as possible who would like to keep access to banking services in the county to come forward and help make the case to LINK by signing the petition.”
